— Type once, paste fast!

What is Pastemark?

Pastemark is one of those weekend projects, designed to solve just one problem, but do it really well.

No, I asked what Pastemark really is?

Pastemark is a "canned response" tool. It helps you create bookmarklet, which will paste a text of your choice in the specified text field. I created it back when I was heavily involved with russian phpBB community and was often giving similar answers to repetitive questions. But I imagine it could be helpful in many contexts at work or whenever digital communications are involved.

Why Pastemark is better than .txt file and Notepad?

Of course, you can keep your text snippets in .txt file and copy-paste it from Notepad, if you like. It would be quite a bit of hassle though: opening the file browser, finding the file with your text snippets, scrolling through it in a search if the right place, selecting the snippet, coping, returning to the browser and finally pasting it. For sure there are better ways to spend time. With Pastemark, on the other hand, you'll need tree clicks at most!

Ok, but I have nice desktop application which can do this job.

Again, you can keep using it, if you like it. But Pastemark has advantages even in this case:

  1. It's fully cross-platform. If you can run your browser and your browser can run JavaScript, you can run Pastemark! No matter if your use Windows, Linux, Mac, FreeBSD, Android, iOS etc.
  2. It's easy to stay in sync. Pastemarks are just a special kind of bookmarks, and these days browsers do a decent job of keeping those in sync across devices.

Yeah, I liked Pastemark! Can I help somehow?

Yes, of course! If you have friend who needs Pastemark too, you can make him happy. Guess how? Right! Tell him about Pastemark! ;-) We also accept improvements through GitHub.

There are two ways to create a pastemark:

  1. The "Pastemark Fast!" tool
  2. HTML-guru

I'm gonna describe both of them and feel free to choose which one is better for you.

The "Pastemark Fast" tool

The "Pastemark Fast" tool is an easy to use bookmarklet, which pre-configures Pastemark for the desired field and text. Step-by-step:

  1. Drag and drop this link to your bookmarks toolbar: Pastemark Fast!
  2. Go to page where you want to use Pastemark.
  3. Click on the «Pastemark Fast!» bookmarklet and then on target field (where your text should be pasted).
  4. A new tab will be opened with options already set to work with your field.
  5. Check and correct (if needed) options and press «Generate!» button.
  6. Drag and drop the generated bookmarklet onto the bookmarks toolbar.
  7. You've done!

If you are familiar with HTML it may be easier for you to configure Pastemark by yourself.

  1. Go to page where you want to use Pastemark.
  2. Identify target field name or id using the browser's developer tools.
  3. Open Pastemark site.
  4. Type bookmarklet title.
  5. Select how bookmarklet should identify target field (by id, field name or your click; however, id is the best way).
  6. If you have chosen id or name, type target id or name (respectively) into the «Target» field.
  7. Type text you want to be pasted.
  8. You've almost done! Press «Generate!» and drag and drop bookmarklet onto your bookmarklet toolbar.
  9. You've done!

Your choice?

Now, you know both ways to create pastemarks. Which one you like?
